Most hair care regimens include three basic steps: shampooing, conditioning, and moisturization. For naturals that go beyond the basics there is a step that proceeds the three I have named above. That step is pre-pooing. A “pre-poo” is conditioning the hair before you cleanse it. Some pre-poo by applying conditioners, others use oils. Some opt to sit under the dryer and others choose to simply cover their hair in either a towel or shower cap.
I’ve seen tons of YouTube videos and blog posts that sang the praises of pre-pooing. For a while I felt like pre-pooing was just another unnecessary step that someone made up to complicate things. It wasn’t until the end of last year that I finally decided to give pre-pooing a try. I hesitantly doused my hair in olive oil, tied a target bag around my head and waited pessimistically for nothing to happen. When I removed my makeshift shower cap I was surprised to discover how soft my hair was! I was even more surprised that the softness lasted after I shampooed and conditioned my hair. Detangling was even a breeze. I stared at the bottle of olive oil and wondered where it had been all my life.
Long story short, I’m a believer. Adding a pre-poo to my hair regimen has dramatically improved my hair.
